Frequently asked questions

We have put a list of frequently asked questions together to try and help you, if you have a specific question that is not addressed in this section, please do not hesitate to contact us.

What is annual mean wind speed?

Wind speed obviously varies from time to time and it indicates how much wind energy is available vary over a year, also known as annual mean wind speed (AMWS). In the UK, AMWS can vary between 4m/s (9.0 mph) for inland site and 8m.s (13mph) or higher on the most exposed sites. This information is updated daily and can be easily obtained from www.metcheck.com.

How much space do I need?

Ideally, the turbine should be situated as far away as possible from buildings or trees to avoid turbulence and to utilise wind energy fully. The requirement for this distance from all obstructions are as below.

If the wind turbine has to be installed where there are obstacles, it should be installed at least 2 metres higher than the top of the obstacle.

What is the best height for me?

Our small scale wind turbine towers are 4 metres and 6 metres high, the medium to large scale turbine towers are 6 metres, 9 metres and 12 metres high. Theoretically, the higher the tower the greater the wind speed, we will advise you the ideal height at our initial site survey and the relevant cost for the different type of towers available and the various capacity rating to match individual family or business needs.

Is the turbine noisy?

Wind turbine noise is less than 10dB(A) below background noise levels, which is much less noise created by air conditioning, so this will not cause a nuisance to neighbours. On a typical site in the countryside, the turbine should be located as far away from buildings as possible, ideally, 100m. However, the noise of the wind turbine is gentle, it is possible and reasonable to locate the wind turbine less than 100m from your home if space is unavailable.

If I have limited space, is that extra cost to install a free standing turbine?

Free standing turbines are more suitable for smaller sites. Obviously, the free standing tower will be more expensive than the guyed designed tower as there is more ground work and deeper foundations are required.
